Message board shenanigans are fun, especially when you should be writing term papers.
Don’t worry mom, I was writing in between the salvos.
Identities changed for their protection:
Act 1: Where We Stumble Upon the Soiled Grounds of the Uninformed
MusketRebellion:
Hey, pretending that you know more about coaching than a guy who has been doing it for 30+ years is really going to make things all better for you. Get a grip, we took the #6 team in the nation to the buzzer. It was a great game. You can blame JB for the last defense all you want, but remember that he coached the other 39:58 as well.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
yes it was a great game, and I said that. But bottom line is there was no pressure on evan turner. They let him catch run and shoot. And this season was nothing less than a failure. That’s my point.
MusketRebellion:
We started a 6’8″ c and a 6’5″ pf. I fail to see how this season was a “failure.” We came off of our first tourney appearance in ten years because of a team that greatly overachieved and you are butt hurt when we come back down to reality? Get over it.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
You start 15th in the nation and return every player from last year… If you think this season is a success then I’ve lost respect for you.
MusketRebellion:
We were overrated to start the year and lost the only two guys on the team who knew anything about leadership. I didn’t say that this year was a success, it clearly wasn’t. But chalking it up as a failure is outlandish. We just aren’t that good, sorry that ruined your day. I’m sorry that your e-RAGE was triggered because a relatively lousy basketball team lost a nailbiter to the #6 team in the nation. As for you not respecting me, I’m truly heartbroken. My e-peen is severely diminished.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
They lost CJ Lee walk on guard. They had enough talent to be more successfull than this.
MusketRebellion:
They lost CJ Lee and David Merritt who were the only 2 true PG’s on the roster. Since you are the son of a coach, and a coach yourself, you should know that with all the talent in the world you still need the glue that keeps that team together. This team has a guy who is currently an NBDL prospect and a guy who will be heading to Europe. If you think that is a lot of talent then you are mistaken.
Act 2: The Gangrenous Show Their True Colors
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
Darrius Morris was supposed to be that true point guard, and I know that they were lost without a point guard, cuz like you siad, I am a coach. But they had good enough talent to be better than what they finished.
MusketRebellion:
Darius Morris was a fr coming in to an offense he has never played before. Counting on him to be our savior was a bit far fetched. That doesn’t change the fact that we have no bench, save 7 minutes a game from Gibson, and 2 guys starting whose only other offers were from Valpo. This team is a bubble team, at best, talent wise. It was a down year, we can complain all we want but it won’t make it any better. Rants online aren’t the cure for your athletic/spiritual lows.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
We should have finished better than we did. And online rants are fun, I put this up for my blog, it’s easiest on here. I didn’t say Morris was a savior, but seriously, you finally came around. Finally said it was a down year. We should have been better that’s my point
MusketRebellion:
It is Michigan basketball, we’ve had 1 non down year in the last 11. Great point. Also, which dorm are you in at MSU?
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
haha yupp, well there was 2… the year we won the NIT, we didn’t dance cuz that was the year we were suspended or whatever from the tourney. I live over in Holmes
MusketRebellion:
We went to the NIT because we didn’t get selected by the committee. Post season bans generally refer to, you know, the post season. Stick to MSU, kid. This Michigan stuff just isn’t your thing.
Act 3: Trampled Underfoot By Stored Knowledge of Dark Years Past
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
dude we were banned from participating the NCAA tournament for 2 seasons. I remember it, if I’m wrong show me facts. And sir I was born and raised Michigan fan, so I know what I’m talking about
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
did some research, it was a self-imposed withdrawal from the NCAA tournament
GS85 PAIN TRAIN:
Hold on wait a second are you saying that the only reason michigan was in the NIT in 2004 was becasue they were banned from the NCAA tourny?
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
They had a good enough resume and then they imposed a self withdrawal from the tourney.
MusketRebellion:
When you impose a postseason ban, you don’t go to the postseason. The NIT counts as the postseason because it is, you know, after the season.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
They withdrew from teh NCAA tournament, not the NIT. I just researched it and found an article and read it myself.
MusketRebellion:
They withdrew from the post-season of the 2002-2003 season. Not 2004, where they were not selected for the NCAA tournament so they went to the NIT and won.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
Thought it was the same year as the NIT, meh whatever. I knew there was a year that they withdrew from the tourney. Oh well, doesn’t change any of my opinions whatsoever. Still disappointing
MusketRebellion:
They didn’t withdraw from the tourney, they were 17 – 13. They would’ve gone to the NIT, again. You changed your opinion. “Disappointing” is a long way from a “failure.” I agree the season was disappointing, but your original opinion, that it was a failure, is based largely on preseason hype, which is purely conjecture, and has to be taken with a grain of salt when gauging personal expectations.
Act 4: A Sword is Thrust, A Curtain Call, A Reckoning
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
Fine, I’ll say it. Failure. I thought 15 was too high for them, but I felt they were a good enough team to make the tourney.
MusketRebellion:
Like I said earlier, the tallest starter on the team is 6’8″. You can’t expect a team to perform on a high level with that lack of height. This is especially true in the Big Ten where the conference is known for its bruising, punishing, defensive style. If we could have hit our 3s for most of the year then yeah, maybe we are a bubble team. But this team really just isn’t that good. They shouldn’t have even been ranked to start the year. I mean, Alabama had their way with us.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
I could go on and on about my disappoint with the performance, the team, the beilein system, but I don’t have the time. Here’s the short story.
I don’t like his system, I hate the jack up the three philosophy, I prefer big bruisers. But that’s not Beilein, that’s not the teams he builds. So the teams he build should suceed in his way, but they didn’t suceed. Bottom line: Failed season, don’t like JB, and I agree, can’t win with a 4 guard line up.
MusketRebellion:
Beilein’s system is brilliant, but you’re right, it does require shooters. When the shots fall you get performances like Minnesota. The problem this year was not the system, or Beilein, it was that the kids who we counted on to make outside shots, didn’t. When that happened, we didn’t have the height to be a bruiser team because the two kids we thought would be that guy both were hurt before the season. When you lose kids at 7’1″ and 6’9″ to start the year, you are missing some key pieces.
RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan:
When the shots don’t fall you need another way to score, and they don’t have that. And it’s Beilein’s guys that aren’t makin the shots. It’s the guys he brought in for his system.
I’m gonna end this here. Agree to disagree about Beilein
MusketRebellion:
Final statement, the guys that he brought in at the last second his first year had a rough season, but we weren’t upset with Stu and Zack last year when they were overachieving. Vogrich looks to be a sniper, he needs to be bigger and work on d. Morris will be great. We had Sims down low, but that’s it. Again, when two of the other big guys you are counting on are out for the year, things get dicey down low. If we had had Cronin and Morgan, we might be talking about an NCAA bid, but probably not.
The End
This year was sad for all of us, and Evan Turner has a flare for exclamatory daggers to end the sentences of our season. But this is not the lesson. The lesson is, that you should have to register to have a webcam. Plain and simple. You register with the National Bureau That Prevents Interwebz Asshattery (NBTPIA) and if you violate their strict code of conduct, you get it taken away.
You, RandomSpartanWhoLikesMichigan, are on your last warning. Don’t let Act 5 call for your removal from the digital playground.
