Tonight, the Phoenix Suns will face the favored Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference Playoffs. Naturally, the sports media is concentrating on the major matchups – Jason Richardson vs. Kobe, Nash vs. Fish, and Amare Stoudemire vs. Pau Gas…wait. Of course they’re not. Why should blogs like the Big Lead and AOL fanhouse and media outlets like CBS and ESPN.com cover basketball when there are tangentially related relatives to torment?

In case you wondering, Carrie Stoudemire isn’t a transvestite Damon Stoudamire, or a gender confused Salim Stoudamire. She won’t be on the bench of either team. She even hasn’t and likely won’t play in the WNBA. What she did do, more than twenty years ago, was give birth to Amare. Beyond this, she isn’t newsworthy in the least. Of course, all these sites link to the ESPN source article that details a history of substance abuse, crime, and even prostitution? My grandfather was a drunk and a cocaine addict – where is his ESPN feature?

My grandfather, of course, was only the parent of a few doctors and a patent attorney, and the grandfather of a sporadically-read blogger. Until the appetite for blogger gossip ramps up, he’s likely in the clear. Somehow, being a relative of a public figure in today’s world makes you a public figure -Dez Bryant’s mother has been a topic of conversation for similar reasons. Carrie Stoudemire, plainly, is not a public figure, and deserves to undergo her problems and solutions away from media glare.

Carrie, however, isn’t the only victim in the case of course. Amare is a man who lost his father at the age of twelve, grew up in a poor, drug-infested neighborhood, saw his brother thrown in prison, lost a college scholarship, bounced through six high-schools in five years, and lost his scholarship to Memphis because a Nike representative gave his mother $100 for cigarattes while in prison, earning Stoudemire the dreaded “character concern” label, and sinking his draft position arguably eight spots in the process. Despite this, Stoudemire is one of the NBA’s finest power forwards, has not had an instance of poor behavior, has been honored by the NBA for his charity work, and helps build water-wells in Sierra Leone in his spare time. In other words – despite every time his family, corporations trying to put their hands in his pocket, and life in general have conspired to ruin his life, they have failed.

The congratulations Stoudemire gets, of course, is to have the story of his mother, of whom he is by accounts very protective, placed on the front page of ESPN.com the morning of one of the most important games in his life. This dog has been chasing him for his entire life, and the sports media has let it in to piss on his rug. Is this really the way it’s supposed to work?

Deadspin popularized sports gossip, but used to at least keep it to, you know, sports figures. Then they expanded and became a gossip site devoted to soft-core porn and ESPN gossip. The college blogosphere is full of apocryphal stories of odd living arrangements, bizarre parents, and other such nonsense. How’s this for a change: TALK ABOUT THE ATHLETES. Here’s hoping that the next site willing to publicize the tangential struggles of a “civilian” is willing to stand gossip about members of their own family. We eagerly await the Big Lead to dish about his slut of an Aunt.

Recently, Washington Wizards* guards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton engaged in an argurment in the team locker room that resulted in guns being drawn and threats being made. Arenas explained he was just “joking,” but was nevertheless suspended indefinitely by the NBA for his actions. A further part of his punishment is to endorse safe gun habits in a public forum. Mr. Arenas has kindly shared some of his gun safety tips and general firearm etiquette with the WLA.

1.) Always keep your guns away from your children. A good way to ensure this is to leave them at your place of employ. Particularly if you work at a post office or airport. Just make sure you take the guns out of your workplace on “Bring Your Daughter To Work Day” and put them under your child’s mattress for safe keeping. On that day and that day only.

2.) Guns can be a hilarious prop in practical jokes or games. Did your friend just go through a messy break up or divorce? Wrap a gun in a box and give it to them as “cheer up” present. Cop pull you over for speeding? Pull the gun out of your glove box and start waving it wildly. Looking for a fun game at your kid’s birthday party? Pin the ((hopefully) unloaded) gun on the donkey. Nothing’s funnier than a gun!

3.) Did you know you can train a dog to handle a gun? You can! This can be a rewarding experience for both man and man’s best friend.

4.) If your dog ever accidentally shoots itself or someone else, DO NOT send the tape to America’s Funniest Home Videos.

5.) Take corporate team building exercises like the “Trust Fall” to the next level. The “Trust Challenge Your Co-Worker To Shoot You In The Face To Settle A Gambling Debt” is a great way for group members to bond.

6.) In this age of surround sound and BluRay players and HDTVs, it can be hard to remember what remote controls what device. A handgun is the original universal remote! Just ask Elvis.

7.) When settling gambling debts, the proper ratio of guns to money owed is one to $15,000.

8.) If you must keep your guns at home, keep them in a gun locker. Then, keep a gun under your bed with a trigger lock in case someone tries to steal those guns in the middle of the night. Then, keep a gun with the safety on, but no trigger lock, in your nightstand in case someone tries to steal the dresser gun. Then, keep a loaded gun with no safety on under your pillow in case someone tries to steal the nightstand gun. Then, keep a loaded gun with no safety on taped to your hand while you sleep, in case someone tries to steal the pillow gun.

The WLA thanks Mr. Arenas and hopes the tips above are helpful to its readership.

* In late 1996, David Stern sent an expeditionary team into the future using a time machine developed by Dr. Dunkenstein, Darrell Griffith (PhD Yale University — Theoretical Physics). When they returned they described the Arenas/Crittendon incident to Stern. Stern immediately moved to change the Bullet’s team name to the Wizards in an effort to a.) limit damage to the NBA brand and b.) prevent MSM NBA writers’ misuse of the concept of irony.

1. Boston Celtics (10-4). Despite some recent struggles – notably a loss to the Orlando Magic, a game they lost despite holding Dwight HowARD THE DUCK WAS THE WORST PIECE OF SHIT MOVIE I’VE SCENE IN MY LIFE. WHEN I THINK THAT GEORGE LUCAS MAKES MILlion Little Pieces, despite Frey’s disingenuous portrayal of a true story truly touched my heart. One thing I like about the NBA is all the time I get to read when I’m out on the road. Recently, I’ve even started to take up the guitar WHICH PROVIDES A CONVENIENT RECEPTACLE FOR MY SHOTGUN THAT I CARRY AROUND IN CASE THE ZFT AMBUSHES ME AND TRIES TO INJECT ME WITH GROwth is very important to me, as a person, which is why I’ve tried to branch out in a number of different cultural directions, of with literature and music are really only a start. I really think that, looking forward to my future beyond basketball, this cultural background with provide me with opportunities after I’m done plAY WITH A SOCKIF THEY WANT ME TO. THE LEATHER BALL IS JUST ANOTHER WAY THAT THEY’RE TRYING TO LULL US, TO MAKE US COMPLACENT BEFORE THE VISITORS FROM THE OTHER DIMENSions to my life are very important. I’m also an avid fan of body-art, and even quite a good cook. I’m not down all of the “french technique” stuff, but I learned how to make some great chicken and hot sauce and even sometimes make my own home-made doNUTS THAT ROOKIE PIECE OF SHIT BETTER NOT FUCKING FORGET MY KRISPY KREME DONUTS HE THINKS I WAS JUST JOKING AROUND WITH HIM, BUT I’M WATCHING, WAITING FOR SIGNS THAT HE’S ONE OF THEM, SECRETLY TRYING TO STARVE US BEFORE OUR GAME AGAINST THOSE, FILTHY, LYING CELTICS WHO LET ME GO AFTER I GAVE THEM THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE.

Please check back next week, for Delonte West’s NBA Power-rankings.
